Which is the right wireless conference phone for your office?

The key question with a wireless conference phone is do you need it to be expandable? This is the ability to use the unit in larger meeting rooms. Not all wireless models (like the Polycom 2W non expandable) offer this.

Some models like the Polycom 2W expandable achieve this by allowing additional microphones to be added. This takes the number of participants from 10 up to 16 with the microphones. Other models like the Clear One Max Attach Wireless conference phone allow you to connect two separate units to achieve the same thing. One of the amazing benefits of the ClearOne Max Attach Wireless conference phone is that you can actually use the 2 different units in different rooms. This is perfect where you don’t have the physical space but want more participants. That is very unique and very clever!

What range can you expect from a wireless conference phone?

The range for the different brands is stated as being the approximately the same (45-50m) so expansion is probably the key defining difference. The range is very dependent on the office environment and materials used. The 50m range is quoted as a standard, relatively open plan layout. If you have multiple levels or lots of physical interference (double brick, extensive glass etc) then you may experience reduced wireless range.

How does the wireless conference phone connect to your phone system?

The different wireless models connect to different devices so it is important you know what you want it for. A model like the Konftel 300W is designed for a mobile phone, a computer or an existing DECT network – not a normal phone system. The ClearOne Max Wireless connects to your existing phone system via an analogue extension only. The Polycom 2W range also connects to your existing phone system in the same way but offers both computer and mobile connection as well with optional cables. If you’re looking for a device to connect to a SIM card then check out the unique Konftel 300M. If you want it to connect to your existing digital PBX then you need to have a spare analogue extension available on your pbx. If you have never had a conference phone before you will need a qualified phone technician to install an analogue extension point in the location you want the main base of the wireless conference phone to be. They will then program the phone system accordingly and it will be given an extension like any other digital handset on the system. You can make calls from it, transfer calls to it and more. The difference is you will be able to do this in any room you want to take the device to. Make sure you get the correct wireless conference phone for the application you have in mind.

How many parties can you wirelessly conference at any one time?

This is completely dependent on the number of phone lines you have available and the number of simultaneous conference calls your pbx can support. If you have 3 phone lines you can only conference in 3 external parties. Internally you can connect more than 3 but it’s the outside parties that we’re referring to. Some phone systems like the Avaya can conference in up to 64 parties whereas others can only offer 3 – no matter how many phone lines you have connected to the pabx. If you are looking at more than 3 party conferencing at one time you will need to check with your phone technician to ensure your pbx model can support this.

Which conference phone brand should you choose?

The Polycom, Konftel and ClearOne wireless conference phones are all excellent. The key is to by the one that offers the type of connection you want as stated before. If you want it for your computer and VoIP calls then the Konftel 300W and 300M both do this via a USB cable. The Polycom does this via analogue sound cables which isn’t as good. No matter which wireless conference phone you choose all are covered by comprehensive manufacturer warranties and are genuine, Australian delivered products.
